TRAVELLING THE WORLD AS A GLOBAL FIELD OPERATIONS MANAGER

Global Field Operations

Imagine a working week that involves you travelling from Hong Kong to Tokyo to the Philippines then to London.

For our Global Field Operations Manager, Jason Pavey, this isn’t too hard to imagine.Jason Pavey

In Jason’s new role, he’s responsible for BSO’s global footprint which means he often has to travel to one of our 103 data centres worldwide, supporting clients based in the Americas, Europe, Middle East and APAC region.

In this blog, Jason takes us through his role, and why he enjoys the excitement and versatility his position provides.

What are your responsibilities at BSO?

I am responsible for all of BSO’s backbone builds, so ensuring new equipment is built configured and tested before shipping to sites for installation. I then either install them myself or overlook the installation with local engineers, with whom I have a great working relationship.

What does your typical working day look like?

In my opinion, there is no typical day, as my role is quite varied.

At my first interview with BSO, I was asked if I am an individual that can ‘wear many different hats.’ I remember one day I came into our London office, where I am often based, and I planned to work on tasks via our application Jira. Just as I sat at my desk, my manager came over and asked if I had my passport on me. I carry my passport with me at all times as I have to use it as a form of identification to access data centres. I was then asked to prepare a network device and look for tickets to Milan. I ask when for, he said tonight! That afternoon, I’m on a flight to Milan, travelling to a data centre.

This isn’t an everyday occurrence, but a perfect example of how versatile my day to day work can be, and how exciting it can be.

If all goes to plan, my daily tasks are to care for any customer or data centre we have a presence in worldwide. This involves delivering projects to customers anywhere in the world or fixing issues with existing sites.

What do you like most about your position?

My role means I never stay still at any one time and that no two days are ever the same. I also enjoy working with my team of colleagues who are innovative and extremely skilled at their jobs.

Also, I enjoy working at BSO as it’s a smaller company which means it’s more agile than bigger organisations I have worked with before. In my opinion, the company is a quick, well-run machine with quality staff that go above and beyond to deliver services to their customers.

Where has been your favourite place to travel to?

With my job, I travel all over the world. One week I could be in New York, the next I could be in Helsinki. I recently arrived back from Estonia, and I will soon be travelling to Hong Kong.

My favourite place I’ve travelled to is Tokyo. I really enjoy the food, the people and the culture. At BSO we are continually expanding our global network presence, so I know that there is always an opportunity for me to travel to places I have never been to before.

What would you like to achieve at BSO in 2018?

I would like to continue to do my part in ensuring that BSO’s network performs to the highest level for our customers. I would also like to continue to grow my skill set in order to better serve my team and colleagues at BSO.

Are there any projects coming up that you’re looking forward to?

My new role means that I have more responsibilities in Paris, and the data centres we have there. I am looking forward to the new challenge this will present.

Overall, I look forward to my future with BSO, and the many adventures my position has in store for me.
